Volunteer of the Month :: MAUREEN TURNER CAREY

Over the course of a year, Austin Bat Cave has hundreds of volunteers. Each one of these people is unique and AMAZING for donating their time to helping kids write.

Maureen Turner Carey is one of these volunteers, and she goes above and beyond the call of The Bat.  To say she’s amazing is vastly underestimating Maureen’s dedication and talents. ABC is thrilled and honored to have her represent us and to help kids with their writing skills. Thanks you, Maureen! Keep an eye on your mailbox for a humble thank you from us at Austin Bat Cave.

“Maureen is an incredibly creative instructor. She makes it a priority to gather feedback from the upper-elementary kids she works with (in Del Valle Elementary’s ACE program) so that she knows what would get them fired up and writing. So far, she has implemented inventive units–along with her talented assistant instructors, Sarah Howze and Elisabeth Garry–on mystery writing, eerie fairy tales, and graphic/comic writing. Without fail, she calls after each class with a thorough, thoughtful, and good-humored update, and when she plans lessons, she manages to be both organized and inspired. She’s truly a joy to work with–and if I’m lucky, sometimes she brings her adorable two-year-old son to a meeting!” –Sarah Morrison, ABC’s Program Director
