Led by long-time blogger and current technical writer, Shrie Spangler, our intrepid team of volunteers taught a three day writing workshop with the Volunteens at the Thinkery Museum. For many of these high schoolers, their internship at the museum is their first working experience. Over the summer, they learn how to work at the museum and gain useful experience.

In order to prepare them for the challenges of the job hunt, Austin Bat Cave developed a professional writing curriculum that taught students how to search for the perfect job and researching the position as well as writing résumés and cover letter. The workshop culminated in a series of mock interviews with each student.

Each Austin Bat Cave volunteer brought their own expertise to the workshop. With their various academic and professional backgrounds, they offered a wealth of knowledge to their students. Teams of volunteers like this one are the reason that Austin Bat Cave is able to carry out its mission of providing thrilling and creative writing workshops for local youngsters.

In this workshop, kids had the chance to write sample résumés and cover letters for their dream jobs. We had future doctors, teachers, venture capitalists, and a dragon tamer! It’s often hard to get kids excited about a professional writing workshop, but Shrie and her team kept the kids laughing and engaged throughout the week. With support like this, Austin Bat Cave is off to a great summer start!
