East Austin Cave Map $10
Not long after news of the rediscovery of Austin Bat Cave had begun to spread through the Texas scientific and caving communities, Dr. Lugo, professor of comparative speleogenesis, arrived in town at the invitation of a city or university official, though later no one would admit to having asked her.
Several reporters were on hand to witness her descent into the cave the following day. Equipped with a hardhat, a head lamp, a couple of cheese sandwiches, a notebook, a CB radio, a compass, a collapsable canoe and a jug of drinking water, she lowered herself through the opening and was gone from sight. Moments later James, her reticent assistant, received the first radio transmission, which he obligingly copied onto a page of one of the reporter’s notebooks: “COOL AND DAMP.”
Lugo has not been seen since. She continues to radio her reports to James, but it is not known whether she emerges from the cave periodically or whether she has remained underground, supplied with food and water by her assistant. Over time her reported data have formed the basis for this rough map of the cave, surveys of its animal and vegetable life, and much speculation. Now, this front & back replica lovingly designed by the award-winning team of Carnegie Lewis can be yours for just $10. (Comes flat or folded!)
