Journey to an Imaginary Land: A Fantasy Writing Workshop (ages 10-14)
June 11-15 3pm-4:30pm
Teacher: Matthew Stigler
Location: Austin Bat Cave, 1807 W 11th Street, Austin, TX

Have you dreamed of creating your own Middle Earth, Narnia, or wizarding world? Do you imagine nonhuman characters and realms that defy earthly laws? In this weeklong workshop, students will create a fantasy world and fill it with characters. What is the history of this world? What are its legends and conflicts? Students will use examples and discussion to learn about the fantasy genre and will produce an illustrated encyclopedia guide to their new world.

Science Fiction, Science Fact
Ages 8-11
June 25-29, 10:00am – 12:00pm
Instructors: TBD

What causes volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and tornadoes? How does Batman use physics? How do cheetahs run so fast, how do fish breathe, and how do fireflies glow? In this intriguing workshop, students will learn about natural disasters, the biology behind awesome animals, and the science behind superheroes. Students will use their newfound science knowledge to write science-based fiction, and they’ll also screen and critique a sci-fi movie to get familiar with the genre.

Make ’Em Laugh: A Humor Writing and Performance Workshop (ages 14-18)
July 16-20 3pm-4:30pm
Teacher: Jared Walls
Location: Austin Bat Cave, 1807 W 11th Street, Austin, TX

During this highly educational, extremely hilarious workshop, standup comic Jared Walls, along with other Austin comedians, will guide students as they learn to write and perform standup and sketch comedy. The week will be spent studying the pros, gathering material, and perfecting setup, timing, and punchlines, and at the end of the workshop, students will put on a show at the New Movement Theater. Follow your comedy dreams—or as funnyman Mitch Hedberg once said, “Don’t follow your dreams. Ask where they’re going and hook up with them later.”
