Welcome our new intern, Becca Frank!
Q: What brings you to Austin?
I am in Austin solely to work for ABC! I found out about ABC after exploring the 826 Valencia website, and decided Austin would be a cool, new place to spend my summer. I was so happy when Katie and Ali chose to welcome me to the ABC team and I can’t wait for the summer camps to get started!
Q: What do you think of Austin so far?
Well, this is my first time visiting the south, and everyone told me to prepare myself for the heat. Everyone back home thinks I’m a little nuts for choosing to spend a summer outside of New England, but so far I think I’ve been doing pretty well. I’m from a small town in CT, so it’s very exciting for me to be living in a city that has so much happening all the time. And as far as the heat goes–I’m just happy the Texas air-conditioning is better is than New England air-conditioning.
Q: What made you interested in Austin Bat Cave?
I’ve been lucky enough to have some amazing English teachers. I mean, life-changing English teachers who completely transform the way you read and write and see the world. Some of the closest people in my life are teachers who love their jobs. I can see how important it is for a student to be given one-on-one attention and I’ve always been interested in organizations that foster this kind of learning environment. ABC is doing a fantastic job at creating a fun and creative learning experience for the kids involved. I also think the fact that all of ABC’s programs are free is so important. So, I came to Austin to help ABC in whatever way I can.
Q: How do you incorporate writing and/or working with kids into your everyday life?
One of my favorite things to do is write letters to people. I think it’s a great way to say what you’re really thinking without having to hold up a conversation and I love finding new pen pals. I actually have a younger cousin who lives in Austin who I’ve never met, but we’ve been writing to each other for the past year or so and I can’t wait to meet her!
Q: What are your favorite talents and/or hobbies?
I love to play music and am always joining new bands when I’m at school. Most recently I played drums in a band made up of three other Mount Holyoke students. We played a few shows last Spring and even got to play on my school’s radio station (WMHC!), which was one of my favorite experiences with a band. Coming to Austin as a person who plays music is very exciting and I’ve been making a list of venues to visit and shows to see this summer. Anyone else trying to see Ben Folds next week??
When I’m not playing music, I like to catch up on Netflix like every other human on Earth.
Q: How old are you? Where did you grow up? Where did you go to school?
I am 21 years old. I grew up in Mansfield, CT and I am currently studying English at Mount Holyoke College, a small women’s liberal arts college in Western Massachusetts.
