Austin Bat Cave is celebrating the addition of Sasha Marie Vliet as the new Executive Director of our team. Sasha will be taking over for Katie Angermeier Haab, who has been contributing to Austin Bat Cave since 2008 and was ED from 2015. We will miss Katie and her smile and celebrate all she has accomplished but we are eager to welcome Sasha on board as we continue to serve students in Central Texas and to connect a diverse population of young learners with talented and inspiring writers and mentors.
Sasha graduated from Oberlin College where she played bass guitar, rode her bike through the woods, wrote stories, stayed up late telling jokes and was a founding member of a rowdy and brain twisting group of writers, musicians and thinkers called the Church of Maps. She went on to teach in the public schools in Boston and settled in Austin, where she lived and taught on the East Side. Sasha received a Master’s Degree from UT Austin in Creative Writing and English Literature and learned from a cohort of extraordinary writers and educators and then continued on to receive a PhD in American Studies, focusing on American Youth Culture and teenage creative expression and identity formation. Sasha lives in 78704 with her hilarious and inquisitive 9-year-old son, who plays the drums and runs his own dog care business, Crayville Canine Care, with the help of their own two dogs. Sasha has been involved in several small business concepts as founder and concept builder and handled development, operations and management. She grew up in the restaurant business and watched her father change the face of the community in which he lived and worked, and, additionally, she learned from her mother who was CEO and President of one of the largest single endowment health foundations in the country. Sasha has lived and traveled throughout Mexico and Central America where she helped establish a domestic shelter and worked with three separate schools. She also served on the Board of Directors for the A Better Chance program in New England that supported girls from New York City living and learning in a residential program while attending New England public schools. She loves food, fitness, Crayville traditions and spending time with her kiddo and other kiddos, wordsmiths, magic makers and idea shapers.
When asked about what she most looks forward to as she gets her sea legs with Austin Bat Cave, Sasha says that she is excited to become a unifying force with the already super staff and board, to see expanded programming and to push energetic collaborations with new and existing partners and friends. Working with kids and providing for them a safe and enriching environment for expression and creativity have been lifelong pursuits and Sasha is still pinching herself as she realizes she gets to do just that on behalf of the more than 1700 kids in Austin and with the dynamic Austin Bat Cave community.
Welcome to the cave, Sasha! We are looking forward to doing lots of great work with you in our new space and throughout Austin.
