Life doesn’t fit the shape of a traditional story—it is fragmented and unruly, filled with random passions and disjointed plotlines. How can we shape these fragments of our own experience into a compelling and satisfying narrative?
In this 8-week workshop, we will learn about many diverse forms of creative nonfiction, including lyric essays, braided essays, personal memoir, and more. We will analyze short works of contemporary creative nonfiction as models, as we explore how to tell our own stories—and the stories of the world around us—in ways that are surprising, honest, thought-provoking, and bold.
Each student will have the opportunity to submit at least one piece of creative nonfiction for workshop, to receive thoughtful and constructive feedback from both the instructor and fellow participants. In addition to sharing and discussing one another’s work, we will also discuss the craft of creative nonfiction and strategies for getting your work published.
