In 2017-2018, ABC worked with 138 Austin writers and artists and partnered with 41 local Title 1 schools and service organizations to serve 1,360 Central Texas youth. Austin Bat Cave caters its program curricula to the needs of our student communities.
During all workshops, our tutors provide one-on-one instruction to students and guide them through the full brainstorming, drafting, editing, and rewriting narrative writing process. The young authors always complete a crafted written project to share with others through public readings and publications. More importantly, our young writers emerge with sharpened writing skills and empowered voices.
Please consider signing up for our workshops.
ABC values the relationships we have with Austin-area schools, and we’re always enthusiastic about forging relationships with new schools. We also offer programs in youth correctional facilities and crisis centers.
All of our in-school and after-school workshops for children ages 6-18 are FREE for participants. Austin Bat Cave partners with Title 1 schools and nonprofit organizations to match students with volunteers in order to provide meaningful opportunities for creative and expository writing skill development.
In addition to our in-school workshops, we offer workshops on weekends and in the summer as well as programs in youth correctional facilities and crisis centers.
Our workshop and program offerings range from the sorely needed (College Essay Writing, SAT Prep) to the totally awesome (Screenwriting, Songwriting, Hip Hop Poetry).
ABC tailors programs to fit the needs of each school or facility. We’ve worked with many schools in Austin, Del Valle, Manor, and neighboring districts, and we’re always enthusiastic about forging relationships.
If you are a teacher or administrator and are interested in having ABC writing or tutoring programs at your school, please contact Program Director, Heather Jones.
Every year, Austin Bat Cave puts together free summer writing workshops. These camps are open registration for students in Austin and surrounding cities. Students are provided with everything they will need including snacks & water. In some cases, lunch is provided.
If you have any questions, please e-mail our Program Director, Heather Jones.

Please note that our adult programs cost money to attend; all proceeds support ABC’s free writing programs for kids ages 6-18.
To listen to some of our participants tell their stories, visit our Story Department.
Every year, Austin Bat Cave publishes an anthology of student writing. We believe that when students see their work in print, they take pride in having become published authors, and they have concrete evidence of their accomplishments as writers. This year’s anthology is titled Welcome to my Planet and features writing by kids ages 6–18.
Austin Bat Cave is grateful to our friends who allow us to continue producing our anthology:
