From Meret Oppenheim’s furred tea cup to Samanta Schweblin’s Mouthful of Birds, how has the thread of surrealism woven its way from visual art into writing? How can you unlock your subconscious mind to create new, innovative works of fiction? How can you edit and refine surreal works of writing to make them effective?
In this four-week intensive class, we’ll explore the history of surrealism in visual and written forms, and how this mode has evolved to impact literature today. Then, we will survey and dissect the early tenets of Surrealism before taking a closer look at the contemporary mode of Surrealism that is political, inclusive, and vibrant.
Once we’ve established the historical and modern trends in Surrealism, we’ll begin a generative approach to writing that includes readings, prompts, and guides that will help you create new work. We’ll read innovative short works and unpack their structure and form, then apply those methods to your own work.
In our final week, we will explore the necessity of incredible editing in order to bring your work to life. Here, we will learn how to hone in our lines and ensure our narratives are satisfying.
You’ll leave this class with the ability to approach writing the way an artist approaches the canvas, creating space for play, exploration, and the freedom to write first drafts written from the depths of your subconscious. If you are searching for a class that will spark your creativity, drive you to create new works, and hone your editing skills, join us.
This Austin Bat Cave adult writing class is limited to 12 students and is open to writers of all levels.
